Maryland Bankers Association and Member Banks Partner with the American Red Cross for Hurricane Sandy Disaster Relief
Annapolis, MD (November 21, 2012) – The Maryland Bankers Association (MBA) has partnered with the American Red Cross to assist in the response and recovery efforts of those affected by the devastation of Hurricane Sandy. Specified banks across the State will be accepting donations to the Red Cross from their employees, customers and general public.
In the days after Hurricane Sandy hit, several of our member banks reached out to MBA to let us know what they were doing to help their customers and communities. Others asked what they could do to help. MBA’s President & CEO Kathleen Murphy states, “During this holiday season, while we have much for which to be thankful, we are reminded that there are many households and businesses experiencing hardship in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Support of the relief effort is just another way that the Maryland Banking Industry demonstrates its commitment to giving back.” We owe a special thanks to MBA member Russell Grimes, President & CEO, Carroll Community Bank, who led the initiative to partner with the American Red Cross. Through this partnership, many MBA’s member banks have created a fund at their individual institutions for the American Red Cross Hurricane Sandy Disaster Relief, which is patterned after a similar relief fund effort that was undertaken by Maryland banks after the September 11 tragedy.
As of November 21, 2012, the following MBA participating bank members are helping those affected by Hurricane Sandy by accepting donations on behalf of the American Red Cross through Monday, December 31.
Baltimore County Savings Bank
Carroll Community Bank
Fraternity Federal Savings & Loan
Prince George’s FSB
Sandy Spring Bank
Slavie Federal Savings Bank
St. Casimirs Savings Bank
The Bank of Glen Burnie
The Columbia Bank
The National Bank of Cambridge
Banks will continue to join the list of participating institutions throughout the campaign.
One hundred percent of donations received by MBA’s participating banks members will be donated to the American Red Cross and will be used to provide shelter, food, emotional support and other assistance in response to the Hurricane Sandy disaster. The Maryland Bankers Association will conclude this important initiative with a culminating event at the American Red Cross headquarters in Baltimore. During this event, the participating banks will present a figurative check representative of the total contributions made.
Please contact each participating bank to find out how to contribute. Attached is the contact information for participating banks. This information is also available online at www.redcross.org/md/baltimore. In addition to the listed financial institutions, Harford Bank is making a generous contribution to the American Red Cross for the Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.
To date, the Red Cross has helped people in ten states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico affected by Hurricane Sandy. More than 8,800 American Red Cross workers from all over the country are supporting shelters, providing food and water at fixed sites, and driving through neighborhoods to distribute meals and supplies. The Red Cross has served more than 5.8 million meals and snack, provided more than 62,300 health services and emotional support contacts, and handed out more than 1.9 million relief items.
We encourage the general public to contribute at the listed financial institutions, but donations can also be sent directly to the American Red Cross by calling 1-800-RED CROSS, online at www.redcross.org, by texting REDCROSS to 90999, or by mail to American Red Cross of the Chesapeake Region located at 4800 Mount Hope Drive in Baltimore, MD 21215.
